This tip shows you :
- how to get detailed information on your PC.
- how to get detailed information on the "Direct X" software interface to your graphic card
- how to run tests on your graphic card
Here how to get started.
- Click on the Start Menu
- Select "Run...". A small window appears, with the title "Run" with a single field marked to the left "Open:"
- In the field marked "Open:" type: "dxdiag" (meaning Direct X DIAGnostic)
- Clik the "OK" button. A window appears with the title "DirectX Diagnostic Tool". and a series of tabs. The "System" tab should be active and showing amongst other things:
- Processor Type and Speed
- Memory size (physical memory)
- Page File used and available (how much memory can be saved on disk, when running programs that use more memory than exist physically on the machine)
- Version of Direct X running
- Click on the tab marked "Display". This tabs shows details about the graphic card installed (name, manufacturer, Graphic Chip, Memory, etc..). It also shows a rectangular section marked "DirectX Features".
- Click on "Test DirectDraw" and follow the instructions. This will test the interface between software and hardware (your graphic card).
- Click on the other test buttons as needed.
Note: the tabs "Sound", "Music", "Input", "Network" can be used to diagnostic other areas of Direct X. The tab "More Help" contains more detailed information on how to troubleshoot your computer if you need to.
If you want more detailed information on your computer the tab "More Help" has a button marked "MSInfo..". This button opens a new window titled "System Information". From there you can get information down to the chip level, including Adrresses Ranges, DMA channels and interrupts used.
